Bargersville Cemetery
Also known as Doty Cemetery
Bargersville Cemetery, also known as Doty Cemetery is about one half
acre to one acre in size and is completely fenced in. The land is part of what was
originally 160 acres owned by George Doty. It is now surrounded by a
farm, a flea market and residential properties, mostly rentals.
The cemetery was established on or before May 2, 1867, when George Doty was buried. He is the first known burial.
The cemetery was used until January 3, 1979 when Zona Johnson became
the last person to be buried here. The majority of the burials were
between 1870 and about 1920
Veteran Burials in Bargersville (Doty) Cemetery
There are possibly five
veterans of the
Civil War buried here. Two have been confirmed and have military
markers The rest are being researched. The veterans being researched
are:
T. B. Totten,
born december 24, 1842 and died September 6, 1900 in Johnson County.
Service confirmed in Co. I, 18th Regiment Indiana Infantry.
Martin A. Vaughn,
born April 25, 1826 and died February 20, 1914 in Johnson County.
Service not yet confirmed. Possibly served in the 4th Regiment, Indiana
Cavalry.
Winston B. Garr,
born February 23, 1824 and died Dec 9, 1897 in Johnson County. Service confirmed. Served in 70th Regiment, Indiana Infantry.
John Doty,
born November 14, 1826 and died May 30, 1912 in Johnson County. Service
not yet conformed. Possible service in one of four different regiment's.
John William Mathena,
born May 26, 1826 in Virginia and died July 9, 1900 in Johnson County.
Service not yet confirmed by military records but a written family
history indicates that John W. Mathena was a Confederate Soldier from
Virginia.
Other Interesting Information
The Doty's are descendants of Edward Doty, who was a passenger onboard the Mayflower and signed the Mayflower Compact.
