Genealogy

Watkins-Pickerell is located on the grounds of Allendale Christian Church Camp in Nineveh Township, Johnson County, Indiana near the town of Trafalgar. Permission to visit this cemetery is required. Inquire at the main office of the camp.

The cemetery is in very bad condition but it can be saved. In late 2008 permission was received to restore Watkins-Pickerell Cemetery and in January Robert Lee of Greenwood and Brad Manzenberger of Stone Revival Cemetery Restoration, Inc. visited the site to begin making plans for the restoration process.

Volunteers will undertake this effort on various workdays throughout 2009 and and beyond if necessary to complete the project.

Work days will be scheduled periodically and dates will be listed here.

If you are interested in volunteer in time or money for materials contact Brad Manzenberger of Stone Revival Cemetery Restoration, Inc. at brad@stonerevival.net.

There are thirty-three listed burials and about half of the headstones have been located. The first phase of the restoration will consist of clearing leaves, brush and intrusive trees.

After that, cleaning and repair of headstones will begin. Volunteers will be trained in the proper techniques to ensure no further damage is done to the marker.

History
The first known burial was that of four-year-old James W. Pickrel in August 1834. The last confirmed burial was that of David F. Daniel in February 1876. The Johnson County Historical Society listing published in 2000 lists a burial "about 75 years ago" for Elizabeth Middleton, making her death circa 1925. There is no stone and no confirmation has yet been located, but if correct she would be the last burial.

Surnames are: Bryant, Culner, Daniel, Epperson, McGander, Mellender, Middleton, Pickrel/Pickerel, Ragsdale, Shake, Watkins, Wylie.

There are 33 listed burials here. Of these, at least 17 died before their 16th birthday, with most of those before their tenth birthday.
